Painted Mailbox

Take an old wooden mailbox and turn it into a personalized piece. This was just a plain old wooden mailbox and I put some of Disney’s most famous characters on it for a friend who is obsessed with all things Disney. It ended up being a showpiece on the front of her home that she’s proud to show and receives many compliments.

If you are looking to do this, just make sure you have a nice smooth sanded and clean surface. Use a rough grit sandpaper to get any varnish or old paint off. Then use a very fine grit sandpaper to finish sanding for a smooth finish.

Here the mailbox was just painted with acrylic paints found at any craft store. Then it was varnished with a clear polyurethane paint to protect the acrylic paint. I did two coats, but you can do three for extra protection.

Or if you are looking to do something more solid and uniform, you can use exterior paints that you would find in any hardware or department store that sells paint. Exterior paint will protect any wood against the elements. If you do any stencilling over the exterior paint then, it wouldn’t hurt to do a varnish coat overtop for extra protection.
